How to Find Luxury Hotels in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan was once a major stopping point on the Silk Road. Today it enjoys some prosperity thanks to its oil fields. Even so, few people think of Azerbaijan as a tourist destination because of unrest and corruption that seem to stalk its every move. People who enjoy ancient castles and wondrous natural phenomena should make it a point to visit, however.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A computer with internet access in order to book accommodations online.
  • A valid passport from your nation of origin and all appropriate visas.

Choose the Right Luxury Hotel in Azerbaijan

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Azerbaijan Tourism or visit the Web site (see Resources below). Pick a luxury hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital. Prices in Baku are generally very low for high-end accommodations, with several hotels offering rooms for less than $150 per night.
Step2
Book a hotel near the Apsheron Peninsula for the history lover in your family. Ramana is a city near some of the oldest and most interesting medieval castles in Europe.
Step3
Find accommodations along the Azerbaijan's Caspian coastline. There aren't many resorts to be found, but there are still a few hotels on the waterfront that offer a good deal of luxury.
Step4
Stay in accommodations near the Ateşgah Fire Temple, one of the more extraordinary religious sites in the country. It draws thousands of visitors interested in seeing where fire would literally spew from the earth (thanks to natural gas below the surface).

Get in and around Azerbaijan

Step1
Book a hotel near the train station in Baku. Several great accommodations are near the main station in the city center, and the train is a great way to visit other points in Azerbaijan.
Step2
Fly to Baku from several major Russian airports. Moscow has the most flights to Azerbaijan of any city.
Step3
Book accommodations across the Caspian in Turkmenistan. It's another country famous for being a stopping point on the Silk Road, and it features a number of interesting sites similar to those in Azerbaijan.

Tips & Warnings

  • Several diseases, like yellow fever, malaria and diphtheria, are concerns in Azerbaijan. Take any precautions you can prior to arriving in the country, and keep up to date on any health advisories.
  • Avoid the Nagorno-Karabakh region as it is in a state of conflict regarding its status. Armenia and Azerbaijan both contend it's part of their respective nation, and thus it is a dangerous place to visit.
  • Avoid the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia. All crossings between the two are completely closed.
