The East African nation of Uganda is home to a highly concentrated and diverse range of wildlife, and is one of the last remaining natural habitats for the endangered mountain gorilla. In fact, gorilla tracking expeditions are the most popular tourist attraction in Uganda.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Find Cheap Accommodations in Uganda

Step1
Camp out in a national park for good, cheap accommodations. Some have cabins or huts you can sleep in, while others will just offer you a place to pitch your own tent. Either way, you'll probably only pay about $5 a night.
Step2
Snuggle with your sweetie at a bed and breakfast. Unlike in other countries, bed and breakfast inns in Uganda are quite inexpensive. These cheap accommodations will still have the cozy, romantic atmosphere of bed and breakfasts everywhere without the high price tag. These are a great place to stay if you are traveling with your significant other.
Step3
Stay away from international and chain hotels, as these are expensive. A better option is a traveler's hotel, which will offer pared-down accommodations at a relatively low price. Expect to have to share a bathroom with other guests.

Navigate Uganda

Step1
Use public transportation. Uganda has a good bus system in the major cities, and private bus companies make periodic runs between towns.
Step2
Catch a lift on a boda-boda. These mopeds and bicycles with passenger cushions on the back are a unique means of local transportation. They also make for a quick and fun way to travel within cities and towns.

Explore Uganda

Step1
Go to the park. With seven national parks, Uganda does not lack for spectacular scenery. Whether you are going on safari, gorilla tracking, or just for an amazing hike to remember, there is plenty of space to do it in Uganda's national parks.
Step2
See the source. The legendary source of the Nile River is located in Uganda. Generations of explorers tried unsuccessfully to find this famed source for centuries, often becoming lost forever in the jungle. You, however, can visit the source safely and see a piece of history in the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Arrange for gorilla tracking permits at least 6 months in advance, as available spots on these tours fill up quickly.
  • Make sure you get a malaria vaccination before going to Uganda.
