  • A computer with Internet access
  • A valid passport

    Plan Your Transportation

  1. Step 1

Consider scheduling your flight with a layover in Europe if you are traveling from the United States. Not only are direct flights from America very long (15 hours), they aren't cheap either.

  2. Step 2

Speak with a travel agent or safari guide in Namibia to arrange transportation around Namibia. Off-road vehicles are generally not required, as most of the roads are well maintained, but it is helpful to have a driver familiar with the area.

  3. Book Your Accommodations

  4. Step 1

Choose a hotel in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. There are a number of cheap, comfortable accommodations to choose from that come equipped with a variety of amenities.

  5. Step 2

Experience the breathtaking vistas found throughout Namibia. Some hotels and lodges offer an 'eco-experience,' where you can discover the many dunes and plains that make up the country's landscape.

  6. Step 3

Consider staying at one or more campgrounds in Namibia. These campgrounds are often quite comfortable, with hot and cold water and other amenities, while offering an authentic Namibian experience on the cheap!

  7. Step 4

Tips & Warnings
  • Know that English is Namibia's official language. German, Afrikaans and Ovambo are also spoken.
  • Consider a travel package. Airlines, hotels and tour operators often offer travel packages in which rates are reduced for certain airline/hotel or hotel/tour combinations. Ask a travel agent whether packages are available for Namibia.
  • Write down and save all reservation or confirmation numbers.
  • Namibia is a very dry desert region. Be sure to bring along plenty of water on long trips through rural areas and stay hydrated at all times during your stay.
  • Convert your money ahead of time to get the best exchange rate. The local currency is the Namibian Dollar.
  • Exercise caution on public transportation like buses, where skilled pickpockets can ruin your day by taking money and valuables from exposed pockets and easily accessible bags.
  • Watch for poisonous snakes and other dangerous animals when trekking around Namibia.
  • Be aware that HIV infection is rampant in Namibia and it is absolutely necessary to be safe at all times.
