How to Find Cheap Hotels in Micronesia

Micronesia is a broad term that applies to hundreds of islands spread across thousands of miles of the Pacific Ocean from a point west of Hawaii to east of the Philippines. The scene of a number of significant battles during World War II, Micronesia includes three U.S. territories (Guam, Wake Island and the Northern Marianas) as well as five independent countries (Palau, Nauru, Kiribati, Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia). Visitors head to Micronesia for the sun, beautiful beaches and waters that provide some of the world's best deep-sea fishing and diving.

Schedule Travel to Micronesia

Step1
Check the airports nearest your destination for fares and schedules. Each of the nations and territories has at least one international airport. Several international airlines fly to these airports, but mostly they are served by regional carriers.
Step2
Consider sailing to Micronesia, whose waters seem made for cruise ships. Numerous cruise lines stop at various ports in the region of Micronesia.

Find Cheap Accommodations in Micronesia

Step1
Look to the Western-style or chain hotels in the major cities, particularly those with large airports, for cheap accommodations. Generally any hotel not directly on the water will have budget lodging available.
Step2
Think about renting a boat. Most of the major cities have boat rentals, which is a great way to cut down on lodging expenses while offering the freedom to get around to nearby islands.
Step3
Look for guest cottages on some of the more remote islands; the further off the beaten path a location, the more likely it is to offer cheap prices for basic accommodations.
Step4
Consult local real estate agents for sublets and short-term rentals. Several online resources exist for these options as well, and there are more and more such possibilities as the islands continue to attract visitors and develop a tourist infrastructure.
Step5
Consult with South Pacific Resorts for booking information throughout the Micronesian Islands at their Web site (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider purchasing a 'Visit the South Pacific Pass' available from any of the regional carriers that service the many airports in greater Micronesia. All the airlines honor the pass.
  • Arrange entry documents well in advance if you're fortunate enough to take a private vessel to the Federated States of Micronesia.
  • If you're planning on traveling to the Federated States of Micronesia, know that service is infrequent (about once or twice a year).
  • Only experienced sailors should try covering long distances on the ocean itself.
  • South Pacific Resorts does not operate a booking phone number for accommodations in Micronesia.
  • Visas are not required for Americans but they are for residents of other English-speaking countries; check with specific destinations for full details.
