With plenty of history and tourist attractions, former Iron Curtain republics of Eastern Europe are a cheap and popular alternative to their Western neighbors. Residents of Krakow, one of the oldest and largest cities in Poland, are eager to show visitors that their country has grown out of its Cold War past while retaining its traditional culture.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Know Your Destination

Step1
Learn some survival Polish. English is commonly spoken among young Poles and at tourist information centers.
Step2
Marvel at the Old Town's medieval square and its Renaissance architecture. Although occupied by the Nazis during World War II, the city escaped undamaged.

Step5
Take a bus or tram to get to more distant areas.

Tips & Warnings

  • Citizens of most Western countries do not require a visa to enter Poland.
  • Only use taxis with a meter.
  • If you have trouble finding accommodations, a tourist information center or a rooms agency (biuro zakwaterowanie) may be able to place you in a private home.
  • Don't say yes to anyone who approaches you offering private accommodations until you know the area. This is common during the summer.
  • Start looking for cheap accommodations months in advance if you want to travel between April and October.
