How to Find Cheap Hotels in Thailand

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia, the region of Thailand rivals its neighbors in beautiful landscapes, temples and hospitality, not mention Thai food! The main part of Thailand is surrounded by the countries of Cambodia, Laos and Burma. This main part is broken into four regions: Eastern, Northeastern, Central and Northern. The Southern region of Thailand is a strip that reaches down to the northern border of Malaysia by snaking between the Gulf of Thailand and the Malacca Strait. If you're traveling on a budget, the weakness of Thailand's currency (Baht) on the global market puts these regions of Thailand within your easy reach.

  1. Get the Best Cheap Accommodations in Thailand

    • 1

Favor other accommodations over 'bed and breakfasts' in Thailand, since they are priced on the higher side and are somewhat of an exclusive novelty.

    • 2

Search for guesthouses or hostels, often used interchangeably since there is little difference in price or accommodations in Thailand. While they still have dorm-style sleeping arrangements, these hostels aren't like those of the west. They often include mini-bars and cable television in the rooms, along with free linens, secure lockers and Internet access.

    • 3

Rent a cottage and stay a while. If you like a place, look for Thailand's self-catering accommodations for very cheap. Reserved in week-long blocks, you're buying in bulk. You can get luxury accommodations all over Thailand that include hot tubs, off-street parking, swimming pools, and all the necessities for living in an apartment for anywhere from $150 to $800 per week on average. Hotels charge extra for each additional person, but pack as many people as you like into these little bungalows and split the cost!

    • 4

Book your hotel without counting your pennies. While hotels in many countries are too expensive for the budget traveler, hotels in Thailand are amazingly affordable. It is often possible to get even a 4-star hotel for less than $50 a night.

    • 5

Sleep under the open sky and get the cheapest accommodations available. Thailand has 76 national parks, and almost all have at least one camping site. You can even rent a tent in some of them for less than a dollar a night! Just bring your own basic camping gear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reservation clerks often have trouble with English in Thailand, so prevent misunderstandings by making your reservations by online system, fax, email or travel agent.

  • Help yourself secure better cheap accommodations by learning the customs of Thailand. Thai people don't expect you to speak the language, but you don't need to offend them with your actions. For example, do not kiss or hug someone when you meet; don't show the bottom of your feet to anyone; learn to use your left hand with the 'Thai toilet'; and respect the king!

  • A passport alone won't get you into Thailand. Don't forget to get your visa, which will permit you to stay in the country for thirty days.

  • Realize that the address you're given is a roman form of the original Thai address, and this translation is very inconsistent. You might find a street spelt three different ways on maps from three different publishers, yet they will be phonetically similar. Do not even depend upon classifications like avenue, road or street, as it is sometimes an arbitrary choice of the translator.

  • Stay away from the monkeys! Cute monkeys might seem innocent as they hang around the many beautiful temples of Thailand, but beware of their charming looks. They have big teeth and know how to use them!
