Bangkok, the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, is widely viewed as one of the most desirable vacation spots in the world. Bangkok gives you a variety of travel options: sky train, subway, taxi or tuk-tuk (three-wheeled motorized version of the rickshaw). You can even board the boats that sit in the ancient Venice-like canals called klongs and fed by the Chao Phraya River. You'll get the impression that Bangkok wants to welcome you as soon as you enter its brand-new three-billion-dollar international airport.

Get the Best Cheap Accommodations in Bangkok, Thailand

  1. Step 1

Stay in the most well-connected part of Bangkok: the central area on the westside of the Chao Phraya River known as Riverside. Bangkok is broken up into six main areas: Riverside, Sukhumvit, Siam/Silom, Ratchadapisek, Ramkhamhaeng and Bangna Trad. All public transportation departs from within Riverside, also considered "Old Bangkok". Since the supply of hotels is larger than the demand in Bangkok, Thailand, there are plenty of great hotels available for less than $50 online.

  2. Step 2

Learn to haggle politely. In hotels rated 3 or more stars, it's generally accepted that you may not agree to pay the first price offered. Simply ask for a discount or a 'special price' after they quote you the price. Bangkok is overrun by businessmen. Dress well and appear somewhat important, even offer your business card, and you might get a discounted 'corporate rate'. Finally, to improve your haggling, learn a few phrases in Thai that are appropriate for your gender, especially a salutation, an expression of thanks and the words for please.

  3. Step 3

Book cheaply and pick one of the many hostels in Bangkok, Thailand. The dorm lifestyle is the same as in the hostels of other countries like Ireland and Germany, but the amenities are more, much more. For less then $20 per night, you get amenities galore, depending upon the hostel. Many offer free linens and fluffy towels, free security lockers, and even coupons for manicure/pedicure services and free beer.

  4. Step 4

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a hotel near the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit System) for convenience's sake.
  • Some of the cheapest hotels in Thailand are not well staffed with English speakers. Either stay in an international hostel or pay a little bit more to get the higher rated hotels with English speakers, otherwise be prepared for misunderstandings.
  • The electric train will get you most places, but some locations require taxis, which line up outside of the hotels in Bangkok. Use the doorman as your taxi-driver handler, and absolutely insist that you do not want to go anywhere else but your desired tourist destination, or you could end up on quite a joyride.
