The City of Galway (Gaillimh) is surrounded by the fabled beauty of County Galway, Ireland. The average summer temperature is 64 degrees Fahrenheit, so there is a logical purpose behind all the storybook stone-fenced pastures of wooly sheep. Located on the River Galway (Corrib), which empties into Lough Atalia, Galway sits on the chilly North Atlantic Ocean flanking the west coast of Ireland. Since Galway City is one of the four largest in the Republic of Ireland, you can find cheap accommodations.

Choosing Your Accommodations in Galway, Ireland

Step1
Eat at a hotel, but don't stay in one! Hotels start around $100 per night for single accommodations in Galway City, making them out of reach for the budget traveler. The hotels do house many of the numerous restaurants with entertainment, though, for which Galway City is known.
Step2
Save money during the tourist's off-season by going to Galway City during the Christmas season. Galway City decks its old-style halls in holiday decor that makes for a fantasyland you are sure to never forget. With dancing girls, music and beer flowing down the cobblestone streets, Galway, Ireland, can be a wonderfully cheap Christmas vacation.
Step3
Stay in a guesthouse to be on the river in the center of Galway. Most of the guesthouses and B&Bs are concentrated in the residentially dense areas to the southeast and northwest of Galway, but a few affordable ones are centrally located.
Step4
Stay at one of the city's thirteen hostels, at a tenth of the price of the cheapest hotels in Galway! To be close to Ceannt Station, where trains and buses leave to all tourist attractions, choose the Claddagh Hostel or the Galway City Hostel for clean, safe, cheap accommodations.
Step5
Plan stays in little villages surrounding Galway--like Clarinbridge, Kinvara, Salthill or Spiddal--around the time of year you'll stay. With exclusive hotels catering to the global golfer, your best bet is to look for specials when the weather is likely to be inclement and golfers are unlikely to play and you might get something under $100.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get your money's worth if choosing a hotel by making sure it offers arrangements for reaching the many popular tourist attractions surrounding Galway: the scenic countryside of Connemara National Park, the medieval Athenry Castle or the 16th century Dunguaire Castle overlooking Galway. (From April to September Dunguaire has authentic banquets for you!)
  • Be aware that starting over 6,000 years ago as a small fishing village gives Galway City small cobblestone streets best traversed on foot. So leave the car at the rental company and use the bus system if you plan to travel from accommodations outside of the city.
