Founded in the late 1800s by a group of 50 German families, Anaheim, California, gave no hint of its future industry. Set in the balmy valley of Orange County, Anaheim represents the epicenter of all things Disney. Disneyland began here in 1955, forever changing the face of this small agricultural town. Today, more than 300,000 people (and one famous mouse) call Anaheim home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A phone
  • A credit card for booking your accommodations
  • A map of Orange County and Anaheim, in particular
  • A computer with Internet connection

Know Your Destination

Step1
Arrive in Anaheim by car on the Interstate 5, or avoid the melee by arriving on Amtrak. The Orange County line can deliver you all the way to the beach at a number of spots, including Laguna Niguel and Oceanside.
Step2
Get ready for the mouse. Disney has more of a presence in Anaheim than just Disneyland. It now encompasses Disney's California Adventure theme park, as well as Downtown Disney.
Step3
Head to Downtown Disney for a huge variety of open-air mall restaurants, shopping and movies. There's no charge and parking is free for the first three hours.

Choose Your Cheap Accommodations in Anaheim, California

Step1
Have the all-American vacation by driving your RV to Anaheim. There are several RV parks available in the area, which let savvy travelers save their money for their fun at Disneyland.
Step2
Stay in the belly of the beast by booking your accommodations in Disneyland itself. While not exactly cheap accommodations, they can be made cheaper by booking far in advance, booking in the off-season, and by asking your representative by phone for any additional discounts available.
Step3
Stay at the beach and drive or ride the rails into Anaheim. This option allows for more scenic accommodations and makes the most sense if you only plan on one day in Anaheim.

Explore More in and Around Anaheim, California

Step1
Catch a game with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. At first the California Angels, then the Anaheim Angels upon moving to Anaheim, the Angels are now saddled with a clunky moniker, but the games are as fun as ever.
Step2
Spend some time in neighboring Irvine if you have a day to kill. This college town has some inviting, walkable areas of shops and restaurants, including Old Town Irvine.
