Things You'll Need:
- A computer with Internet access for making reservations and booking accommodations
-
Step 1
Get up close and personal with nature. Some of the world's most unique plants and animals live only in Papua New Guinea. Watch for beautiful birds, tree kangaroos, and the world's largest butterfly species.
-
Step 2
Learn about local beliefs. Papua New Guinea is one of the few remaining places on the planet where indigenous, pantheistic beliefs are still widely practiced. Over a third of Papua New Guinea's inhabitants still adhere to ancient non-Judeo-Christian belief systems.
-
Step 3
Pack for variety. Weather in Papua New Guinea can be difficult to predict. It can be hot on one side of a mountain and chilly on the other.
-
Step 1
Fly to this remote island destination. You'll most likely land in Port Moresby, though another airport has recently been opened. It is difficult to arrive by boat, and of course, since it's an island, impossible to arrive by car or train.
-
Step 2
Book seats on Air Niugini, the official airline of Papua New Guinea. Because roads are not well maintained and the country's mostly rural population is spread out over great distances and on different islands, expect to spend a lot of time flying.
-
Step 3
Walk. Due to the high cost of car rental and the dangers of driving, walking is the most affordable and most reliable form of transportation. In Port Moresby, however, hire a Public Motor Vehicle to take you from the airport to your accommodations since there are certain neighborhoods where foreigners should not venture alone.
-
Step 1
Enjoy what luxury you can find in Port Moresby. You can find decent accommodations in this city, but if you venture beyond it, don't expect any 5-star hotels or high-end resorts. Travelers come to Papua New Guinea to enjoy rugged nature, not to be pampered at the spa.
-
Step 2
Find accommodations near Mt. Wilhelm. The country's highest peak is a favorite destination for travelers. You don't have to be an expert mountain climber to enjoy Mt. Wilhelm, and the surrounding lowlands are a great place for more casual walks and hiking.
-
Step 3
Visit the Sepik. This area has some of the most accessible beaches in Papua New Guinea, as well as terrific hiking. Direct beach access is a perk of some of the finer hotels in this island area.
-
Step 1
Know that visitors come to Papua New Guinea to experience its unique natural wonders, not to party the night away at upscale clubs or shop at high-end boutiques.
-
Step 2
Seek out the birdwing butterfly (technical name: Queen Alexandra Birdwing Butterly) the largest butterfly in the world. This is one of those natural wonders you just have to see for yourself to believe.
