Once the hideout of Blackbeard the Pirate, Nassau, located on the island of New Providence, is the capital of the Bahamas. Located just 180 miles east-southeast of Miami, Nassau is one of the most convenient and popular vacation spots in the Caribbean.

Find Accommodations in Nassau

Step1
Choose one of the many famous luxury resorts on Paradise Island, which is accessible by bridge or watertaxi from Nassau. Such accommodations can be expensive, with most rooms costing more than $200 per night.
Step2
Stay at one of the more modest hotels on the beach if you're on a budget. These accommodations can run from $40 to $100 per night.
Step3
Considering staying in your room aboard your cruise ship if that's how you got to the Bahamas. Since the hotels on the island can get very crowded, this is one of the more popular options for accommodations in Nassau.

Get to Nassau

Step1
Fly to Lynden Pindling International Airport, which is located about 10 miles west of downtown Nassau.
Step2
Use the island's jitney buses, which are small minibuses that can be hailed like taxicabs, for a cheap way to get around Nassau, and to get from the airport to your accommodations. Fares are usually just $1 each way.
Step3
Take a watertaxi to get to many of the smaller surrounding islands in the Bahamas.
Step4
Consider traveling by foot while in Nassau, as most of the popular destinations are close to the resort area.

Wander through the streets of Nassau Town and visit the many tourist-friendly stores and restaurants and street vendors.

Learn more about Nassau's history as a haven for pirates in the eighteenth century by taking one of the many guided tours available.

on 10/10/2007 If you don't want to stay in a huge crowded hotel with casinos and "entertainment" you should have a look at a hotel called Compass Point on the western end of the island. It is very tropical and pretty and has a beach which is basically empty. I think it lets you experience a more real side of the bahamas.
