On the coast of the Adriatic Sea, nestled at the foot of the Balkan mountains, is the diminutive country of Montenegro. This country is only 5,332 square miles with a population of only 620,000 people. Most tourists will appreciate the coastal region, while those who prefer skiing should check out northern area of Montenegro.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Know Your Destination

Step1
Enjoy the temperate weather. Summer temperatures are generally in the 80s, with mountain temperatures in the 70s. During the winter months, the temperatures only drop below freezing up in the mountains.
Step2
Appreciate the local history. The Illyrians were the first people to settle the area, but the Greeks, Celts and Romans also had a hand in developing the country.
Step3
Learn some key phrases in Serbian. This is the official language of Montenegro, though English is commonly spoken in both the capital and coastal region of this nation.

Select Your Accommodations in Montenegro

Step1
Budget wisely. Most 3-star accommodations in Montenegro range from $50 to $100, and provide you with clean, decent rooms.
Step2
Pamper yourself. Some 4- and 5-star Montenegro resorts feature spas and other high-class perks, though they cost a pretty penny. Many of these nicer hotels are located in the city of Budva.
Step3
Enjoy your privacy. Apartment rentals and private rooms are available for rent through individual owners.
Step4
Book your accommodations near Stari Bar (the Old Town) in Bar for a truly historic trip. Pot shards and artifacts from as long ago as 800 B.C. have been found here. There's also evidence that the Romans sacked the town in the third century.
Step5
Plan an adventure. Stay in a nearby hotel or rough it if you want to go river rafting in Tara Canyon, the second deepest canyon in existence.
Step6
Appreciate the beauty of Boka Kotorska. This gorgeous bay is lined with picture-perfect old towns. Book a room in Kotor, Herceg Novi or Perast.

Arrange Montenegro Transportation

Step1
Book your airline ticket. Montenegro's biggest international airport is located in the capital city of Podgorica, and numerous airlines fly from neighboring European countries, like Zurich, Budapest and Frankfurt. Tivat airport only provides regular flights to and from Belgrade.
Step2
Take the train. There's a railway that tourists might find scenic, going from Belgrade to Montenegro.
Step3
Be brave and rent a car. Montenegro's roads aren't in the best repair, so navigating them can prove a little tricky. Modern highways have not yet been constructed in Montenegro.
Step4
Take the bus. Montenegro buses are a reliable and affordable form of transportation. Tickets rarely exceed €15.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look a person in the eye when you toast. It's the respectful thing to do in Montenegro.
  • Make sure to get an international driver's license if you plan to get behind the wheel in Montenegro.
  • To book accommodations in Montenegro, call the dBO Agency at 011 (+381) 86 40 20 30 or visit the link below.
  • All phone numbers include the international prefix "011." When calling internationally but not from the United States or Canada, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • Though the Balkans have mostly recovered from the unrest of the 1990s, Western tourists should exercise prudence when traveling in the more rural areas of Montenegro.
