Bordered by Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, Cambodia is a country of history and natural beauty. A former French colony, Cambodia has a rich history centered around the majestic Ankgor Wat. Now stable, the country relies on textiles and tourism to support its growing economy. Although tourists once stayed away from this impressive land, there is now more interest than ever in the culture and history of Cambodia.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Accommodations reservations confirmation
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Computer with Internet access for making reservations

Find Your Accommodations

Step1
Look for luxury hotels in the capital city of Phnom Penh. Top of the line accommodations overlooking the city average around $250 per night. For travelers who want amenities similar to those found in Western hotels, first-class hotels in Cambodia are a good bet.
Step2
Stay outside large cities for reasonable rates on mid-range accommodations. At around $40 a night, you won't be staying in the lap of luxury, but you can expect clean, basic rooms with minimal amenities.
Step3
Relax on the beach for mere pennies. Great accommodations can be found in the seaside town of Shianoukville for between $5 and $20 per night.
Step4
Sleep at one of Phnom Penh's hostels and guesthouses located on the edge of Boeng Kak Lake, for gorgeous sunset views at rock-bottom prices.
Step5
Book accommodations by calling tripadvisor.com at (781) 444-1113 or by visiting the link below in Additional Resources.

Get to Know Cambodia

Step1
Learn about the language of the locals. The official language of the country is Khmer, a close relative of Vietnamese.
Step2
Take a tour of the temple at Angkor Wat. One of the most important archaeological sites in the world, Angkor Wat symbolizes the height of the Khmer Empire. Unlike most temples, Angkor Wat faces westward, leading scholars and archaeologists to believe that the temple doubled as a mausoleum for the Khmer king.
Step3
See the sights in the capital city, Phnom Penh. The largest city in Cambodia, Phnom Penh is a city in transition. The infrastructure is rapidly improving in the capital, which is a great relief to tourists and locals alike.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to visit Angkor Wat in the early afternoon, when the bright sun gives you the best view of the temple.
  • Another good time to visit the temple is at sunrise, when you get a breathtaking view over the mountains.
  • Due to heavy influence from foreign nations, Khemer has a lot of French, Vietnamese and Chinese words in colloquial and medical speech.
  • It is now possible to get an entry visa for Cambodia upon arrival at the airport. The fee is around $20 for a 30-day visa.
