Ticks can cause ailments such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease, but the negative effects of their bites can take time to appear. Here's how to treat your tick bite before it develops into something serious.

Things You'll Need:

  • Ice pack
  1. Step 1

    Apply an ice pack to the bite to decrease pain and swelling.

  2. Step 2

    Don't scratch the bite or the area around it.

  3. Step 3

    Use a local anesthetic to reduce and itching.

  4. Step 4

    Take antibiotics or an antihistamine if your doctor so instructs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Record the date of the bite on a calendar; some symptoms may take up to a month to develop.
  • If you eventually experience chills, headache or fever, see a doctor immediately. You should also consult a doctor should you experience extreme fatigue, muscle weakness or difficulty walking.
  • If you develop a rash at the site of the bite, seek medical assistance.
