A racing boat is similar to a sportboat, however it is built to take the stress of high speeds - even in rough waters.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with the boat: the horsepower of the engine and the size of the boat.

  2. Step 2

Properly rig the boat so that it will perform at its best. Be sure that the outboard motor is set at the right height.

  3. Step 3

Trim the motor properly so that the boat is not improperly balanced.

  4. Step 4

Start out at a moderate speed going in a straight line to get comfortable. Gradually increase the throttle.

  5. Step 5

    Practice steering to be comfortable.

  6. Step 6

    Practice riding on rough water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind that racing boats are not always made to pull water skiers or wakeboarders or other towables.
  • When you are first taking your racing boat out, take it out on a calm day to get some practice.
  • Just starting out with a performance or racing boat? Take someone with more experience out with you to teach you the basics.
  • Practice crossing the wake from another boater so that you will be comfortable doing it at higher speeds.
  • Always wear a life jacket.
  • Each state has different regulations around licensing; make sure you aware of the requirements where you plan to race or boat.
  • Keep in mind that the faster you go, the more risk you have.
