How to Operate a Cruising Sailboat

Cruising sailboats come in a variety of sizes, but operating them is based on the same principles.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Learn the fundamental skills of sailing.

  2. Step 2

    Learn about navigation, nautical charts and GPS.

  3. Step 3

    Chart a float plan.

  4. Step 4

    Do a visual check of the sails, sheets and lines before launching the boat.

  5. Step 5

    Point the boat into the wind to depart. Hoist the mainsail and raise the jib.

  6. Step 6

    Trim the mainsail and the jib as necessary.

  7. Step 7

    Pay close attention to the wind conditions and the weather. Stay on course for your destination.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always make sure the boat is balanced.
  • Always have a boating license.
  • Bring an emergency weather radio and be sure you know how to handle a weather emergency.
  • If you don't have the experience necessary to handle an emergency, bring along someone else who does have that experience.
  • Sailing can be dangerous. Before you depart on a cruising boat for a long trip, make sure you feel confident in your ability to sail.
