Even with GPS and coastal navigation, there's nothing like reading a nautical chart to give you the thrill of the sea.

  1. Step 1

    Do your homework: check online and in books for tips on reading a nautical chart; start practicing.

  2. Step 2

    Make some phone calls to local sailing schools. Ask questions about class size and hours so that you can determine which class on reading nautical charts is right for you.

  3. Step 3

    Sign up for the course that will best fit in with your needs and your learning style.

  4. Step 4

    Understand that when you sign up to learn to read a nautical chart not all of the classwork will take place in the classroom; in some courses, you will go out on the water to put your newfound skills to work.

  5. Step 5

    After the course, continue to practice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you've had a chance to practice reading nautical charts it will become easier in time.
  • If you are not comfortable relying only on reading nautical charts, when you set out for a day on your boat make sure that you have either someone who is good at reading nautical charts with you or have an alternate system like GPS as well.
