Gone are the days of the FM dial and struggling to pick up a clear signal while you are out on the water. Now there are satellite radio signals that can be picked up. How do you equip your boat with a satellite radio?

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Do your homework: XM and Sirius are the two main satellite radio providers. Determine which has a service plan/price that suits your needs.

  2. Step 2

    Once you've determined whether you'll be going with XM or Sirius, start looking at receivers.

  3. Step 3

    Determine whether you'll be installing the receiver on your boat or getting a portable system that you'll also be able to use at home or in the car. Buy the receiver that most appeals to you.

  4. Step 4

    Add the right marine antenna for your system–install it on your boat following the manufacturer's instructions.

  5. Step 5

    Sign up to receive the satellite radio service of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people seem to find that Sirius has a clearer signal than XM.
  • Another benefit of satellite radio? No commercials.
  • Want to save on the monthly subscription rate? Consider paying in advance for a year at a time.
  • Don't buy more receiver than you actually need.
