Your cell phone may be enough to keep you in touch for a day on the lake, but if you're taking your boat out on the ocean for longer trips, you don't want to find yourself stranded and unable to call for help. Likewise, you may want to be reached in case there's some sort of emergency at home. Therefore, before you head out to sea you might want to equip your boat with a satellite phone.

From Quick Guide: Whatever Floats Your Boat
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take time for research--there's a lot to learn. Since satellite phones are expensive, be sure you get the right one for your needs.

  2. Step 2

Check out satellite phone service providers. Each will have different calling plans and stronger signals in some areas than others. Not sure which one to go with? Ask around. Others who store their boats at the same marina may have satellite phones; get their opinions before making a commitment.

  3. Step 3

Found the provider you want to go with? Great--now it's time to choose a plan. Look them over to see which plan best suits you.

  4. Step 4

Found a provider and a plan? Terrific. Next step: Choose the satellite phone you want to equip your boat with.

  5. Step 5

Got a provider, a plan and a phone? Now all you need is the right antenna to go along with it to boost the signal from your boat.

  6. Step 6

Have everything you need? All it takes to equip your boat with a satellite phone is to install the antenna and phone following the manufacturer's directions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always make your first call with a satellite phone before you're in a remote place–like on the water. That way, if you need help, you'll be able to get it.
  • Always understand how much your phone is capable of and don't expect it to do more.
  • Always follow the operating instructions of your phone.
  • Not sure a satellite phone is right for you? Rent rather than buy.
  • Satellite phones offer a great deal of convenience, but that convenience comes at a price; most systems are expensive.
