iTunes is a powerful media player that allows you to listen to, organize, change and export music on your computer and iPod. You can even create a Smart Playlist in iTunes that sorts music by a certain artist, date, file size or other criteria. This is a very handy way to create playlists without having to pick each song individually.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with iTunes

Step1
Open iTunes. If you plug your iPod into a docking station or USB port connected to your computer, iTunes will start automatically.
Step2
Go to "File > New Smart Playlist."
Step3
A dialog box with drop-down menus will appear. This is the Smart Playlist interface.
Step4
Check the box labeled "Match the Following Rule." This allows you to select a category to create the playlist around. Categories include Artist, Disc Number and Date Added.
Step5
You can also sort by other criteria including Does Contain, Does Not Contain, or Is Not. Next to this drop-down menu, you will type in the criteria to create your Smart Playlist.
Step6
Next, you can limit the playlist, select the order of songs or sync the playlist for updating.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try creating a Smart Playlist by a genre like Rock or Classical if you wish to have a wide variety of artists in a certain style.
  • You may manually remove songs from playlists.
  • Do not plug an iPod into a computer without iTunes installed. This could cause errors.
