How to Waste the Zombies in Dead Rising

There are as many ways to kill zombies in Dead Rising as there are items sitting around the mall you’re stuck in. It’s a good thing that anything you can pick up is a potential weapon, since soldiers and machine guns are in short supply. Grab whatever you can find and have at it!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use large, solid objects for taking zombies out quickly. Barbells and bowling balls work best and, if you’re lucky, you can take a zombie out with a single whack to the head. Watch out for zombies wearing yellow construction helmets, as this strategy won't work so well against them. These weapons are also slow and, although you can kill a zombie in one to three hits, it takes a few seconds between swings and you'll be left vulnerable.

  2. Step 2

Try to use small, plentiful objects like gems and CDs for pushing back a large group of zombies. These weapons will probably not kill any zombies, but will hurt them a little and push them back from biting range.

  3. Step 3

Grab long weapons like 2x4s, lead pipes and golf clubs to keep lots of zombies at bay. These weapons are good at eliminating zombies quickly with fast strokes, allowing you to move from zombie to zombie efficiently.

  4. Step 4

Slice and dice! Bladed weapons like the hunting knife and katana are extremely efficient killers. The hunting knife kills in one to two strokes and the katana ALWAYS cleaves a zombie in twain. Instant death! The only hitch is that hunting knives are rare and katanas are even rarer. There is a shop in the northwestern end that sells both, but you can't stick around it forever.

  5. Step 5

Shoot ‘em up! As with most zombie thriller games, firearms are rare. You can find pistols on police zombies, though they are rare and should be saved for boss fights. In a pinch, they can be an effective zombie combatant; just make sure you aim for the head. If you’re a lousy shot, you may want to consider something else. Shotguns are good, though you have to fight a psycho with a shotgun to gain access to them.

  6. Step 6

Use the scenery. Potted plants, benches and chairs work surprisingly well for clearing several zombies at once in one to three hits. They are also plentiful and easy to find.

  7. Step 7

Make them helpless. There are several weapons that render zombies harmless while not actually killing them. This is useful when you are surrounded with zombies and are low on killing weapons. Items like the pylon (orange traffic cone), novelty mask, hunk of meat and the coat hanger all work to keep zombies from killing you by blinding them (some more graphically than others). Just be sure you take the zombies out before moving on: any people you picked up along the way will not attack zombies you have blinded. Rather, they will hang around laughing at them and won't follow you.

  8. Step 8

Visit the garden store. There is a wealth of weapons in the garden store that can be surprisingly effective. The lawn mower can clear huge lines of zombies in seconds, the branch trimmer (scythe) takes zombies out in a single shot and things like shovels and machetes are always fun.
