Survive Moving Day
Survive Moving Day

You're organized, you're packed, you've hired the movers, you're ready to go, right? Well, not exactly. Here are a few last minute tips you might've forgotten that'll help make moving day a more manageable experience...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Overnight bag
  • Pet sitter
  • A zen-like sense of calm
  1. Step 1

Before you pack up your computer and printer, print out directions from your old place to the new one for the movers. All you need is your entire life getting lost. Make sure your cell phone number is on the page as well, just in case...

  2. Step 2

Pack an overnight bag with the essential toiletries, medicines and a couple of changes of clothes. You don't want to have to go digging through boxes or big suitcases after an exhausting moving day.

Along the same lines, think about packing a cooler with snacks and drinks for the day. You'll be glad you did.

  3. Step 3

Don't forget the pets! Have their food, dishes, water and leashes available. Since moving day is stressful for pets too, you might want to have a friend, doggie day care or pet sitter watch them. Do NOT leave your dog in the car while you move.

  4. Step 4

Bring one lamp with you. I once moved into an apartment with no overhead lights and all the lamps, not to mention candles and flashlights, were packed. Not a great first night.

  5. Step 5

It's always nice to tip the movers and if it's a long day, treat them to a pizza. So make sure you have some cash on you.

  6. Step 6

Treat yourself to dinner out or at least take-out. You don't want to be digging around for dishes either. Toast your stress-free move!

Tips & Warnings
  • Hire professional movers as soon as you have a firm moving date. Things will go a lot smoother and your friends and your back will thank you.
