Video surveillance has been used for many things--monitoring traffic, deterring cash register theft and stopping shoplifting. It only makes sense that people would use video monitoring to deter thieves from striking at their homes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what your security needs are and how video security cameras would help.

  2. Step 2

Determine the right placement for security cameras. Aim them at doors or windows outside of your home and at your electronics and other valuables inside the home.

  3. Step 3

Make sure that the camera footage is monitored either by you or by a security company. It's important that the police are contacted when anything out of the ordinary is taking place. Make sure that the footage that is captured with the video cameras is recorded either by you or by a security company.

  4. Step 4

Be sure that your outdoor cameras are visible but out of reach.

  5. Step 5

Place signs that let people know that you use video surveillance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have the right number of cameras to record any theft inside your home.
  • Make sure you choose a surveillance and alarm system that not only protects your valuables but that are easy for you to use.
  • Many thieves or would-be thieves are no longer deterred by fake security cameras. You're better off buying the real thing.
  • While it's important to have signs letting people know that video-taping is taking place, know that the signs themselves are not often a deterrent.
