For many working people, online education is the only way to earn a new degree. It would be impossible to quit a job and go to school full time. When studying at home, it can be tempting to not take a course 100% seriously. Here’s how to get the most out of your distance learning experience.

Things You'll Need:

  • Online education class
  • Home office
  • Diligence
  1. Step 1

Set aside some time every week to work on course materials. An online education course lets you study on your own schedule: design a schedule and stick to it. Fight procrastination with all your will. You wouldn’t cut class in a brick and mortar college, the same should go for an online university.

  2. Step 2

Cut down on distractions. Turn off that TV! Better yet, unplug it entirely during the time you set aside to study.

  3. Step 3

The same goes for the Internet: keep emails and web surfing to a minimum while you’re studying.

  4. Step 4

Set up a good work area. Clear your desk of all clutter. Add some new shelving if necessary. Even paint the area around your desk. An organized student will be more productive.

  5. Step 5

Correspond with other students via email, forums, or even in person. This can give a sense of community that will help inspire you to study.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don’t study when you’re hungry or tired. This can be difficult if you’re also working a full time job, but try to study when you’re most alert.
  • Find people who are interested in the subject you’re studying. It will help make the distance experience less solitary.
  • People have the misconception that you can’t fail an online course. If you don’t study, you won’t get a passing grade.
