Wireless home-security alarm systems can be less expensive upfront to install than wired systems, but may require more maintenance. Here's how to determine if a wireless alarm system can be used in your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your home security needs and establish what you are looking for in a home security system. Do you need cameras, motion detectors or a burglar alarm? Or are you concerned more with smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors?

  2. Step 2

Research alarm systems. Get recommendations from friends and family with alarm systems and talk with sales associates to determine which systems will meet your needs.

  3. Step 3

Consider the wiring in your house. Would it be easy or difficult to wire an alarm system into your home?

  4. Step 4

Check for anything in your neighborhood that could interfere with the radio signals of a wireless alarm system.

  5. Step 5

Think about whether you will be able to regularly maintain wireless sensors to make sure their batteries are fresh. Since the sensors in a wireless system run on batteries, you'll need to develop a schedule for changing the batteries if you go with this option.
