Disabling the automatic corrections in Word 2003 allows you to keep what Word might otherwise automatically correct. This is useful for documents filled with words and punctuation that do not follow the rules of Standard English.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Word 2003
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Open a document and pull down the "Tools" menu.

  2. Step 2

Scroll down the "Tools" menu and click on "AutoCorrect Options." This brings up the "AutoCorrect" window. You can see the language being used displayed on the top edge of this window.

  3. Step 3

Remove the check mark from the box next to "Replace text as you type."

  4. Step 4

At the bottom of the pane, uncheck the "Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker" box.

  5. Step 5

Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to apply changes.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you type, the "AutoCorrect Options" button will briefly appear next to words or common typos that Word 2003 has correction suggestions for. Clicking on the "AutoCorrect Options" button is a shortcut to the "AutoCorrect" window where you can turn off the feature.
  • Hit Control+Z to undo a correction. If you have to undo corrections frequently, consider setting exceptions to the "AutoCorrect" rules.
