Word 2003 gives you control over the tab spacing down to tenths of an inch. You can also select the kind of tab that you set, as well as any lines or dashes that you want displayed at the tab’s location.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Word 2003
  • Computer

Step1
Open the Word 2003 document. Pull down the "Format" menu and select "Paragraph."
Step2
Left-click the "Tabs" button in the "Paragraph" window. It is located in the lower-left corner of the window, underneath the "Indents and Spacing" pane. This opens the "Tabs" window.
Step3
Type in the desired tab spacing or use the up and down arrows to alter the default tab spacing.
Step4
Set the alignment for the tab stop with the check boxes.
Step5
Choose the leader. The leader is a line that will appear in the tab position that you have selected.
Step6
Click the "Set" button at the bottom of the "Tabs" window to make the changes. If you don’t like the position or some other aspect of the new tab, go back to the "Tabs" window and click the "Clear" button after selecting the tab you want to delete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Want a faster way to change the tabs? Find the "Left Tab" button at the top of the document and click on it. With each click, the button changes to another type of tab: right tab, center tab, decimal tab or bar tab. Click on the ruler at the top of the document to set the tab stop for that kind of tab.
  • Use the "Clear All" button in the "Tabs" window to erase all changes that you have made to the tabs in a Word 2003 document.
  • Using the fast way to set tabs is less precise than going through the longer process outlined above.
