Cutting, pasting, dragging, dropping—selecting, editing and moving text already seems so easy. But Word 2003 has even more selection shortcuts that you may not know about.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Word 2003
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Select All. Use this feature when you want to copy and paste an entire document or reformat an entire text. Open up a document and hit "Ctrl" and "A" at the same time.

  2. Step 2

Select to the end of a line. Position your cursor at the beginning of your selection, hold the "Shift" key and hit “End.”

  3. Step 3

Select to the beginning of a line. Repeat Step 2, but hit "Shift" and "Home."

  4. Step 4

Select to the end of a paragraph. Simultaneously press "Ctrl" and "Shift" and the down arrow key.

  5. Step 5

Select to the beginning of a paragraph. Press "Ctrl" plus "Shift" plus the up arrow key.

  6. Step 6

Select a vertical block of text. Press "Ctrl," "Shift" and "F8" together. Use the arrow keys to select a block of text. Hit "Escape" to stop selecting.

  7. Step 7

Select a screen. Hold "Shift" and press "Page Up" or "Page Down."

  8. Step 8

Enter “Selection Mode." Press "F8." Use the arrows to select text. By default, you’ll select one character at a time. To increase to a line, hit "F8" again. Hit "F8" one more time to select a sentence. And again for a paragraph. Hit "Shift" plus "F8" to return down. Press "Escape" to cancel “Selection Mode.”

  9. Step 9

Select adjacent text. Hold "Shift" and press your left mouse button to select the text between the starting position and the new position.

  10. Step 10

Select non-adjacent text. Highlight a block of text with the mouse, and then hold "Ctrl" as you select the next block.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you’ve selected text, hit "Ctrl" and "C" to copy, "Ctrl" and "X" to cut and "Ctrl" and "V" to paste.
  • Made a mistake? Press "Ctrl" and "Z" to undo it.
  • Always save a backup! Moving large blocks of text can get messy.
