How to Insert a Picture in Word 2003

By inserting a picture in your document, you can illustrate figures with tables or grab a reader's interest with graphics and photographs. Word 2003 (and later versions) allows you to insert images of all formats in only a few steps.

      Open a Word 2003 document. Double-click the file or opening Word, click "File," and then "Open."

      Insert a picture from the clip collection (which includes generic graphics). Click "Insert," and then "Picture." Click "Clip Collection." Use the "Browse" tab to search the categories and preview images. Use the '"Find" tab for a particular item. Select an item and click "Insert." Go to Step 6.

      Insert clip art. Choose "Insert," and then "Picture." Click "Clip Art." Word 2003 will search your hard drive for graphic files, which you in turn can comb with the search field. After you search, click on the clip art from the results to insert it. Go to Step 6.

      Insert from a file. Click "Insert," and then "Picture." Click "From File." Browse your hard drive for an image you have saved or downloaded from the Internet. Select the image and click "Insert." Go to Step 6.

      Import a picture from a scanner or camera. Connect your scanner or camera and click "Insert," and then "Picture." Click "From scanner or camera." Select the device that contains your picture. Click "Custom insert" to launch the device's driver or capture program. Once you capture the image, it will automatically be inserted into your document.

      Click on your picture to resize it. Several boxes will appear around the edge. Move your cursor over the corner of any box. Click and drag to change the image's size.

      Choose your picture layout. Right-click the picture and select "Format Picture." Click the "Layout" tab. Under "Wrapping style," choose "Tight." This gives you the most flexibility for positioning your picture.

      Move your image. Click the center of your picture and drag it to wherever you want the image to appear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Insert images last. Inserting pictures drastically changes the layout and format of your text.

  • To remove a picture, click the center and press "Delete" on your keyboard.

  • When resizing, always grab the corner box to avoid distorting the image.
