If you commit an error while bidding on eBay, don't fret. The site allows users to retract their bids in certain circumstances. Follow these guidelines to retract a bid on eBay.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Retract a bid if you made a typo. The most common and easily remedied problem is a buyer misplacing a decimal point or hitting a key too many times.

  2. Step 2

Retract a bid if the seller fails to hold up his or her end of the deal by not responding to contact attempts.

  3. Step 3

You’re allowed to retract your bid if the seller has changed the item’s listing significantly since your bid. You should do so if you’re not happy with the new listing.

  4. Step 4

Consider the timeline restrictions on bid retraction. Different restrictions on retracting a bid exist, depending on whether the end of the auction is more or less than 12 hours away.

  5. Step 5

Don’t abuse the privilege. Your eBay profile keeps track of the number of bids you’ve retracted over the past six months. Retracting bids too often may get you suspended.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, anybody can retract a bid. When you lose an auction, don’t start bidding on an identical item until you're sure that the sale is made on the previous auction. The person with the highest bid might retract theirs and you may still win the auction.
  • Retracting a bid will erase that bid and (depending on the timeline) your other bids on that item as well. If you still are interested in the item, rebid immediately after you’ve retracted your incorrect bid.
  • When the sale is finalized and the auction is over, you can no longer retract your bid. At this point you are obligated to pay the seller for the item auctioned.
  • "Buy It Now" sales are binding. You cannot retract a “bid” for a "Buy It Now" item.
