How to help prevent seizures in Little Chihuahuas

We have 6 small long haired chihuahuas and a tiny teacup Chihuahua. I was a foods major in College, and we were told by all the vets to never give our puppies regular cows milk, so we didn't until we had a crisis. We were told by our breeder and our vet to only give the puppies only the premium quality puppy pellets of a superior manufacturer- which we did. However, at first our little female long hair Chihuahua has had about 7 seizures that we were aware of beginning at about 8 weeks. They would last about 1-2 minutes and she would become stiff and paralyzed. We were told it could be hypoglycemia, etc.. She had her first litter of 4 very healthy puppies and when the puppies were less than 4 weeks old, she collapsed one evening. We rushed her to the 24 hr. animal hospital and her calcium level was 4.0 instead of between 7-11, and we were told she could have died. We had to wean the puppies and the puppies, hated and refused the puppy canned formula. I went to the store and bought the best quality organic whole milk in our area (Promised Land). I had heard that 2% or low fat did not agree with some animals. We made a soupy mixture of about 3/4 cup whole milk, 3 tablespoons of baby food strained turkey, and 1/2 cup of puppy Eucanuba (which we put 1/2 cup warm water over and let it sit for a half hour so it was mushy), then we added 1 to 2 little drops of cod liver oil. -- since then we have had no seizures of anyone - no diarrhea, everyone has been healthy and everyone loves it!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Be certain you check with your vet before trying anything with your puppy first, but we used the following:
  • Premium quality whole organic milk
  • Gerber's baby food strained turkey (because numerous articles suggest that seizures may be a lack of the amino acid L-Tryptophan and turkey has a very high percentage of this amino acid)
  • cod liver oil (we keep it in the refrigerator)
  • Eucanaba (we used small Puppy pellets - pre-moistened with warm water and let it set for a half hour and mushed it up)

Step1
Pre moisten the 1/2 cup of puppy pellets with the 1/2 cup warm water and let sit until mushy
Step2
add 3/4 cup of whole organic milk, drop or two of cod liver oil, and stir well. Then warm just until tepid in the microwave 10 sec. to 30 sec.
Step3
After consulting with your vet, begin with a teaspoon or so, then wait a day to see how it is tolerated.
Step4
If well tolerated, add just a bit more at a time to be certain your puppies tolerate this well.
We have had no seizures with any puppies and everyone still loves this mixture. Everyone is healthy and strong.

Tips & Warnings

  • We were told not to use anything but whole milk because some animals are allergic or have reactions to something involved in the process of changing the fat content in milk.
  • Always check with your vet before taking any action, and then if you do try anything, only begin with a teaspoon initially, then wait a day to see how your dog tolerates anything new.
