The Power Mac, especially the Power Mac G5, is considered one of the fastest MACs ever. However, depending on the type of applications you use, you may still require additional memory for the Power Mac. Like other computers, the Power Mac also has specific slots for memory. For instance, the Power Mac G5 has at least two additional DIMM slots that can take 128 MB DIMM RAM each. Besides, you can always add more slots if required. The process of installing RAM may differ slightly depending on the Power Mac model. Here’s how you can install RAM in the Power Mac G5.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Make sure that your Power Mac is switched off before RAM installation.
Step2
Disconnect all the cables attached to your Power Mac and wait for 5 to 10 minutes for all components to cool down.
Step3
Lift the latch provided on the rear side of your machine and slowly remove the access panels.
Step4
Lay your machine down on a soft, dry cloth in such a way that the open side faces up.
Step5
Remove the air deflector.
Step6
Locate the inlet fan assembly. You can access RAM only after removing the fan assembly. Detach the assembly by giving it a firm tug.
Step7
Find the RAM slots (DIMM slots) situated on the logic board of your computer.
Step8
Open the DIMM slot ejectors by pushing them outwards.
Step9
Pull the older RAM out by holding it from the top and bottom edges in case you are replacing it with a new one. While installing the new RAM (DIMM) card, gently place it into the slot. You will know that the RAM has fitted into the slot when the ejectors snap back into their place.
Step10
Replace the air deflector so that it is inserted the same way as it was earlier.
Step11
Align the fan assembly and make sure that it is seated in the same orientation as before dismantling.
Step12
Align the access panels back to their original position and close the latch.
Step13
Connect all the cables and power chord back to your Power Mac.
Step14
Plug your computer to the mains and check if the new RAM is functioning properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure that the RAM you install is compatible with the RAM slots provided in the Power Mac. Most models, as mentioned above, have DIMM slots. You may also install Double-Data-Rate (DDR) Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (SDRAM) in these slots.
  • Wear an anti-static wrist band while installing RAM.
  • Ensure that the latch of access panels is facing the roof. This will assist the alignment of panels.
  • Always refer to the user manual before you install RAM. As mentioned above, the process for installing RAM may differ slightly depending on the model of your Power Mac.
  • Never attempt to open the computer while it is still on. Doing so may damage the internal components of your computer.
