Using the Styles option in Microsoft Word 2003 gives you the ability to make large changes to the document without much effort. It also makes it easier to give the document one uniform look. Doing this is as simple as highlighting and clicking the mouse. Here is how to apply styles in Word 2003.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Word 2003
  • Computer

Step1
Choose an overall style for your document. This includes the font you are looking for, size, color, line spacing and indentation. When you come up with your choices, select the “Styles and Formatting” menu from the “Format” menu on the “Standard” task bar.
Step2
Select the “Normal” style in the menu that appears on the right of the screen. Click on the right of that box on the paragraph mark. Select “Modify” from the drop-down menu that appears.
Step3
Select the options you chose in Step 1 from the “Formatting” section of the “Modify Style” menu that appears. You can change any other style-related item you choose from this menu. Select "Save" and click back into the document, but do not close the “Styles and Formatting” menu.
Step4
Highlight a block of text, and drag the cursor back into the “Styles and Formatting” menu. Select “Normal.” All the options you chose will be applied to the highlighted text.
Step5
Apply this style to the rest of the document as you see fit or create other styles and apply those to other places.

Tips & Warnings

  • Update the style, not just the text you select in the document when you make changes. Making changes to the text but not to the style will not apply to the rest of the document.
  • Experiment with different styles before choosing one for your entire document. There are countless options you can use. Do not get locked into one right away.
  • Save your work each time you stop.
  • Print out a font sheet with the name of each in that font to use as a reference guide before you start.
