How to Add a Patterned Background to a Document in Word 2003

You have composed your document; now add some visual interest to it with a patterned background. Choose from the Microsoft library of background textures, such as granite or realistic paper, or choose a simpler pattern of checkerboard or stripes. Either way, you can set it apart if you add a patterned background to a document in Word 2003.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Word 2003
  • Computer

Step1
Open your Word document. You can do this by clicking “Start” and then choosing Microsoft Word from the menu.
Step2
Open your document. Go to “File” at the top left of your window. From there choose “Open.” Now you can select your document from the list provided.
Step3
Open the “Format” menu at the top of the screen. Select “Background” to open a toolbar of fill color choices.
Step4
Click “Fill Effects” from the toolbar. This will open a dialog box of fill choices.
Step5
Choose the “Texture” button at the top of the box. This will allow you to select a background from a library of textures.
Step6
Choose the “Pattern” button to browse the collection of repeating patterns for the background you need. Change the “Foreground” and “Background” colors to achieve the right effect.
Step7
Apply your pattern or texture selections to you document by pressing “OK.”

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a picture from your hard drive as a background by opening the “Printed Watermark” dialog box.
  • You may choose to resize and perhaps adjust the lightness of your picture for your background using a different program.
  • Like a background, a watermark displays behind the content of a document without obscuring any text. This will not be the main picture.
