A finderscope is a small, secondary telescope mounted on the main telescope. It helps direct the telescope on the point of the desired object to be observed in the sky. A finderscope, also known as a red dot finder, should be precisely aligned with the main telescope before it is used. This is done with the help of the azimuth and altitude control knobs. Here is how to align the red dot finder with the Sky-Watcher SK804TAEQ Tabletop Telescope.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Red dot finder
  • Eyepiece

Step1
Pull the battery cover down and open it.
Step2
Remove the plastic battery cover.
Step3
Rotate the variable brightness control clockwise until you hear a click. This will turn on the red dot finder. Keep rotating the control knob to increase the brightness level.
Step4
Insert a low-power eyepiece into the telescope’s focus tube.
Step5
Locate a bright object and direct the telescope so that the object lies in the center of the field of view.
Step6
Keep both eyes open and gaze at the object through the site tube. If the red dot overlaps the object, the red dot finder is perfectly aligned. If not, then turn the azimuth and altitude adjustment controls of the red dot finder until the red dot unites with the object.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep both eyes open while sighting the object or you may not get accurate results.
