New Year's Eve is a time for celebrations--the parties, the alcohol, the conga lines, the alcohol, the midnight countdown, the alcohol--you get the idea. For those of us who love to celebrate by getting drunk as a skunk, waking up on January 1 can be misery. Here are some tips for curing that hangover and getting your New Year off to a great start.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Breakfast foods
  • Fruit and vegetable juices
  • Plenty of water
  • OTC painkillers

Step1
Stumble into the bathroom and take a painkiller like aspirin with a large glass of water. If you have any vitamin supplements, take some of those too.
Step2
Make your way to the kitchen. Try to avoid bright light if possible.
Step3
Cook yourself a hearty breakfast, even if you don't feel like eating. Eggs, sausages and bacon are great hangover foods and will give you an energy boost. Eggs and meat are rich in amino acids that help the body get rid of toxins.
Step4
Drink more water, then stumble back to the bathroom.
Step5
Take a warm shower and brush your teeth. Feeling clean will lift your mood.
Step6
Relax and sleep some more if you feel like it. It's a holiday.
Step7
Continue drinking water throughout the day to ensure you remain hydrated. If you absolutely can't look at food, add a little honey or sugar to each glass of water you drink.

Tips & Warnings

  • “Prevention is better than the cure" is true in this case. Limit the size of your hangover by getting plenty to eat while you’re partying. Food helps soak up the alcohol.
  • Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration—make every other drink a glass of water, or drink as much water as you can hold before you go to sleep. You’ll be waking up all night for trips to the bathroom, but your hangover will be much more bearable in the morning.
  • Tomato juice is a good option if you don’t like fruit juice—it contains salt, which will help your body retain fluids.
  • Avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks like Coke if possible—they’ll only dehydrate you more.
