PowerPoint 2003 is a versatile tool for creating presentations, whether you plan on using charts, text or photos. If you do employ charts, PowerPoint lets you create legends-formatted to your specifications-to help explain them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PowerPoint 2003
  • Computer

    Create Legend

  1. Step 1

Open PowerPoint and insert information into your chart. Double-click on the legend. A format box will open.

  2. Step 2

Select "Placement" from three tabs that appear at the top of the format box. You will see a range of options for locating the legend on the slide.

  3. Step 3

Select the bullet that corresponds with your legend's destination. Most charts place legends at the bottom.

  4. Step 4

Double-click on the legend again to format it using the two other tabs, "Patterns" and "Fonts." Follow the instructions to modify its appearance.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also move the legend by dragging it with your mouse.
  • To modify subcategories within the legend, select the legend itself then double-click on the specific section you want to edit.
  • Keep your legend legible. After changing pattern and fonts, make sure you can still easily read it. Clearly labeling charts is more important than any artistic concerns.
