How to Install a Pendant Light

Installing a pendant light can add a modern, stylish flair to your home. From three pendant lights over an island to a single pendant light over a reading table and chair in the bedroom, installing a pendant light is a relatively easy process. Just follow these steps.

    • Pendant light
    • Circuit tester
    • Screw driver
    • Insulated wire snippers
    • Insulated pliers
    • Ladder

        Before installing, turn off the power at the source.

        Remove any existing light fixture by unscrewing the fixture and untwisting the wires.

        Once you have removed the old fixture, screw the pendant's bracket into the ceiling.

        Attach the wires from the pendant to the wires hanging from the ceiling. Match the wires by color. Remove 1/2 inch of the colored insulation from the pendant's wires so that you can twist them into the ceiling wires.

        Once you've twisted together the matching wires, attach wire nuts to secure them.

        Push the wires back into the ceiling.

        Attach the pendant's canopy.

        Screw the connectors into the canopy after sliding the connectors over the light cable.

        Install a light bulb.

      • 10

        Turn on the power to ensure the installation succeeded.

    • Use a circuit tester to ensure the power is off before removing an old fixture.
