How to Install Track Lighting Tracks

You can use track lighting to change the play of light and shadow in a room, creating different ambiences to fit your mood. If you follow these steps, you can install the tracks without professional help.

Things You'll Need:

  • Track lighting tracks
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers with rubber-coated handles
  1. Step 1

    Remove the tracks and connectors from the package.

  2. Step 2

    Make sure the power to the existing light is off before removing the old fixture.

  3. Step 3

    Connect the wiring to your track connector.

  4. Step 4

    Hold the track against the ceiling to identify where the mounting holes need to be. Drill the holes and then fasten the track in place with toggle bolts.

  5. Step 5

    Attach the connector cover to the ends of the track.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult an associate at the store to determine what parts you will need to install your lighting: heads, tracks and connectors.
  • If you hit a stud while drilling the mounting holes, use a wood screw to anchor the track in that position.
  • Make sure the track you buy is compatible with the fixtures you choose.
  • If there is no existing fixture in the room, hire an electrician to install an outlet box, switch and necessary wiring.
