Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) is a rewarding career whether it is a full-time job or a part-time job. I teach adults. If you enjoy helping people and enjoy learning about different cultures, you will enjoy being an ESL teacher.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • The ability to speak in front of people
  • A solid knowledge of English grammar
  • Good Listening skills
  1. Step 1

Prepare notes before you teach a class. Make sure you know your material and have enough material to cover the allotted class time.

  2. Step 2

Always speak English. Do not let the students speak their native language during class or to other students.

  3. Step 3

Your classes should include: speaking skills, listening skills, reading skills, grammar skills, and writing skills. If you teach a 1 hour class, focus on one skill per class. If you teach a 2, 3, or 4 hour class, include more skills in each class.

  4. Step 4

Ask the students questions; keep the class interactive. Don't lecture.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you give homework, correct it and review it during the next class.
  • Use pictures and other props.
  • Push your students. If you help them succeed, they will succeed.
  • Your first few classes define the tone of the class. If you are lax on student behavior, expect them to misbehave.
  • Be friendly to your students but don't be their friend. You may have to discipline them or give them a failing grade.
