Universal Serial Bus (USB) drives are compact. They're connected to computers' USB ports to transfer data between machines. These drives are compatible with almost all the operating systems. If the USB port is not available on your computer, you can upgrade your machine. If you don't have additional ports, you can buy a multi-plug for the USB port. Follow these steps to learn how to attach a USB drive to your computer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Check whether the USB port is available in your machine. If not, get the ports you need inserted.
Step2
Remember that USB ports usually come installed with the latest configuration.
Step3
Locate the USB ports. These ports are either on the side of the keyboard or in front panel of the PC.
Step4
Attach the USB drive. Check to see if the drive's ready to use. A series of messages like "Found New Hardware" will pop up on your screen. Your USB drive is now detected and ready to use. If it's not properly attached, the computer will not detect it. If so, make sure the USB connection is secure. Check the cable connector.
Step5
Go to the removable disk in "My Computers" to see the content of the drive. Disconnect the USB when done.
Step6
Get an additional connector cable if the USB port is situated at the back of your computer. This way it will be easy to access and attach the drive.
Step7
Replace the mother board if you don't have a single USB port on your machine.
Step8
Buy a multi-plug USB pin if you fall short of spare USB ports. One multi-plug usually allows 3 USB plug-ins from a single port.
Step9
Confirm if the password protection option is available with the USB drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • USB drives are also known as pen drives, flash drives, thumb drives, jump drives and key drives.
  • When using a USB drive, make sure the security lock is set on "off." Otherwise the hardware will not be detected.
  • Remove the USB drive only after properly ejecting it from the machine. This will avoid data loss.

on 1/24/2008 You don't have to replace the whole motherboard if you have no usb ports - you can purchase a usb card that fits into the same kind of card slots as a sound card or internal modem.
