Computer memory, often referred to as RAM, is responsible for the speed at which different programs run on your computer. You need to buy more memory for your machine when different applications either open or run slowly. If you notice the drive light blinking intermittently, it also indicates the need for more memory. Buying and installing new or more RAM on your computer is one of the most common ways to upgrade your computer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Check your computer configuration. Find out the processor speed, hard drive capacity and RAM. It will be mentioned in the manual that comes with the package from the dealer when you bought the computer. You can also find it by right-clicking on the ‘My Computer’ icon and pressing the ‘Properties’ button. This will display the exact amount of RAM and other details of your computer.
Step2
Determine the exact need to upgrade your computer. For example, if you spend 4 hours a day on your computer working on a variety of applications from word processing to graphic designing, a minimum RAM of 256 MB is recommended.
Step3
Remember, the amount of RAM you need depends on the operating system you are using. For Windows 98, you need 128 MB to 256 MB. In Windows XP, if you are using the Internet and graphic applications, you need 256 MB to 512 MB. In case of gaming, you must have 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM. The RAM modules come in different sizes such as 128 MB, 256 MB and 512 MB.
Step4
Note that most computers have slots for adding or replacing memory sticks. Find a free slot. If you don’t have it, get rid of one of the memory cards and check the number of notches on it.
Step5
Look for the RAM compatibility. Know that there are two main types of RAM commonly used: SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) and RDRAM (Rambus dynamic RAM). You will have to buy the same type of RAM depending on the compatibility criteria set by your computer's manufacturer.
Step6
Learn more about the features and prices of RAM by referring to online buyers’ guides. Browse through reviews and compare pricing. Some popular buyers’ guides are NexTag, Windows Marketplace, MySimon, Bizrate and Epinions (see links below).
Step7
Browse through blogs and tech discussion forums. These are good avenues for gathering more information about RAM.
Step8
Buy RAM after comparing prices in different stores online and offline. Search for online vendors using search engines like Google or Yahoo. Browse through popular online stores such as CompUSA, Best Buy and Circuit City (see links below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Check product specifications before buying. Make sure the RAM you are buying is extensible.
  • Check the warranty. The longer the warranty period, the better the product's performance.
  • Make sure the RAM you buy is easy to install.
