How to Watch Videos on an iPod

Owners of the fifth generation iPod Video can use their iPod to watch video clips. Import your own .mp4 .m4v or .mov files to your iPod or purchase videos from iTunes and then kick back and enjoy an iPod flick. Follow these steps to watch videos on an iPod.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Add video to your iTunes library. Purchase from the iTunes store or drag and drop a video from your hard drive.

  2. Step 2

    Purchase from the iTunes Store. Open up iTunes and choose "iTunes Store" in the “Source List.” Create an account, if you have not already, and browse the store for videos to download.

  3. Step 3

    Import video files from your hard drive. Open up iTunes and click "File" and then "Import." Browse your hard drive for movie files. Select the file and click "Choose" or "OK."

  4. Step 4

    Using the USB or FireWire cable, connect your iPod to your computer.

  5. Step 5

    Manually add videos. Select "Videos" from the “Source List” on the left. Drag a video to the iPod icon.

  6. Step 6

    Sync videos automatically. Click your iPod icon under "Devices" from the “Source list.” Open the “Settings” and click the "Music" tab. Choose the "Sync Music" button and select "Include Music Videos." Click the "Movies Tab" and choose "Sync Movies" and select "All Movies." Click “Apply” and iTunes should sync your movies automatically.

    Disconnect your iPod. Hit the “Eject” button next to the icon and wait for the "Do not Disconnect" display to disappear from the device.

    Choose "Videos" from the iPod main menu. Select a video or playlist to play. Select them from one of the subcategories.

  9. Step 9

    Navigate and control as if you were playing music. Use the click wheel to adjust volume and the “Play/Pause” button to play or pause.

Tips & Warnings
  • To add videos manually, you'll have to change your iPod preferences. Select the option to add videos manually instead of automatically syncing.
  • You can set up iTunes to only add unwatched videos to your iPod as well.
