With iTunes, you can import music from your CDs, music you've saved on your computer, and music you've saved on your iPod from your friend's iTunes. When adding music from CDs, you can set your preferences so iTunes imports your music in particular audio formats. To change the settings, you need to follow the steps here.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
To start, open iTunes.
Step2
Note that some steps may be slightly different for Mac and Windows users.
Step3
Mac users: From the iTunes menu, choose "Preferences." Windows users: On the "Edit" menu, click "Preferences."
Step4
Click the "Advanced" tab, then click the "Importing" tab beneath it.
Step5
From the "Import Using" pop-up menu on Mac, or the drop-down menu on Windows, choose your preferred audio format.
Step6
Choose a different bit rate (if applicable) or choose "Custom" from the "Setting" pop-up menu.
Step7
You can now change some of the encoder's settings. A higher sample rate and bit rate give you better audio quality a larger file. Note: you may not be able to adjust the setting, depending on what file format you chose in step 5.
Step8
If you chose "Custom," choose your preferred sample rate, bit rate and channels from the pop-up menus in the dialog (these will be slightly different depending on which format you have chosen), then click "OK. "
Step9
You can have iTunes play the songs while you're importing by selecting the "Play songs while importing" check box.
Step10
If you'd like iTunes to add the track number before the file name when it creates the audio file, select the "Create file names with track number" check box.
Step11
Click "OK" when you're finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Note that iTunes is set to use the MPEG-4 AAC Encoder by default. This format compresses songs so that you can store more music on your hard drive and the sound quality is almost exactly the same as the CD.
  • Please note that while choosing AIFF Encoder or WAV Encoder will produce the best sound quality, the resulting files will be very large.
