Setting the polar home position of your telescope will help you accurately view celestial objects. By following these steps, you will be able to set the polar home position without too much trouble.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Level the mount by adjusting the tripod legs' length.
Step2
Unlock the R.A. and rotate the Optical Tube Assembly. Stop rotating the Optical Tube Assembly when the counterweight shaft is directly down over the mount.
Step3
Lift and turn the telescope assembly so the tripod leg under the Fine Azimuth Control Knobs faces North (or South if you are in the Southern Hemisphere). Undo the Dec. lock and rotate the optical tube until it also points North (or South if you are in the Southern Hemisphere.) Redo the lock.
Step4
Aim the telescope at the correct latitude by using the latitude T-handle screws to tilt the telescope mount.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use the North Star in the Northern Hemisphere or Sigma Octantis in the Southern Hemisphere for Due North or Due South, respectively.
  • Once you have set the polar home position, you will not need to set it again unless you move to a different latitude.
  • Setting the polar home position does not have to be an exact science. As long as the approximate setting is achieved, you will be able to use and enjoy your telescope.
