How to Be a Successful Warlock in World of Warcraft

Warlocks may call upon evil energies for their magic, but they are fun to play. You deal lots of damage, you get a pet and a free mount. Everyone loves Warlocks! Now, here's how to make your Warlock stand out above the crowd. Could be tricky (especially if you’re a Gnome.) Let’s give it a shot!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Become a Tailor. This will provide you with armor (such as it is) for most of the game, and is a decent way to make money too.

  2. Step 2

Use your minions! The Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Felhound and Felguard are all excellent companions that have different uses. The Imp and Succubus are both casters and have relatively weak offensive abilities, but make up for it with some handy spells! The Voidwalker, Felhound and Felguard are all tanks. Their job is to distract the enemy long enough for you to debuff and kill them.

  3. Step 3

Funnel Health into your minion if you need to. This obviously drains your health, but sometimes the tradeoff is worth it.

  4. Step 4

Weaken the enemy! One of the greatest assets of the Warlock is their array of debuffs. Spells like Immolation, Corruption and the various curses all deal damage over time and make enemies cry for mercy! Use these on every enemy you fight, particularly in pvp combat!

  5. Step 5

Find a good Wand. In case your are running low on mana and your pet is dying, your melee ability won't save you. In these situations (they will come up, trust me) a Wand comes in handy. It is a ranged weapon, requires no mana and can have some handy stat bonuses too!

  6. Step 6

Buff yourself with what you’ve got. Demon Armor and Demon Skin always help and guess what! You can breath underwater for as long as you want!

  7. Step 7

Buy a Soul Bag as soon as you can! You use Soul Shards (earned by using Drain Soul and killing an enemy) for a myrid of things: summoning minions, summoning players, creating Soul stones and Health stones and the list goes on. You will want to keep a lot of them around (10 bare minimum) at all times, and a Soul Bag is the easiest way to do that. Either buy one or makes friends with a high-level Tailor!

  8. Step 8

Give out Healthstones! Mages may have food and water, but Warlocks have Healthstones! They take a Soul Shard to create, but they are an instant-effect healing device! They do have a cooldown like potions though, so don’t bother trying to pop them like candy. It won't work.

  9. Step 9

Use your Soul Stone! This little beauty helps prevent total party disaster! Create one with a Soul Shard then use it on a party member with resurrecting ability. If the group wipes, the member with their soul stored on the stone will have the option to release or use the Soul stone and come back right where they died! Beware though! Make sure they don’t release or don’t use it too quickly! If they release, the Soul stone is useless. If they use it too quickly, the enemies that killed you will still be milling around and they will eat your newly resurrected party member for breakfast!

on 1/26/2009 I'm the most evil warlock on my server. I kill bunnies, puppies, and kittens. I also eat gnomes for snacks when I see them. Can't stand the buggers.

on 1/7/2008 I was leaning more towards instances for the shadowbolt comment. Questing of course you shouldnt be using it often.

on 1/4/2008 I don't actually use Shadowbolt that often. Yes, it's high damage, but the cast time is also quite long and it takes up a lot of mana. When I'm quest grinding, I usually just DoT the mob up, then wand it to death. It takes a little longer per mob, but reduces time spent eating/drinking between mobs.

on 1/4/2008 Decent article but you forgot too include too use shadowbolt often since it is there warlocks highest damage spell, i mean after you have placed your curses of course but i cant tell you how many times i see warlocks just place curses then use drain health its almost stupidity i think.

on 10/10/2007 Great advice, as usual. I'm just coming back to the game after being away for a while. I have an odd question for you: did you ever play a "wickedy" warlock? ;-)
