The iPod media player has become iconic to the point of being a pop culture staple. It is simple, effective and stylish. Here is how to install iPod software on a Mac.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install iTunes 7. It is needed on all iPods and can be downloaded from the Mac Web site.

  2. Step 2

Install additional software. You will need to install additional software included with your iPod.

  3. Step 3

Check to see what kind of iPod you have. The older versions of the iPod (older than generation five) will have an installation CD included with them.

  4. Step 4

Insert the installation CD for older iPods into your Mac. It should begin installation automatically.

  5. Step 5

Plug your generation five iPod into your Mac. The newest incarnations of the iPod (generation five) already have software installed on them, and do not have a CD.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure of which generation iPod you have before going forward with the installation procedure.
  • Periodically, you should check for updates to both iTunes and iPod software from Apple. Downloads are free.
  • Download iTunes only from the Mac site to avoid imitators or viruses. It is free and the download only takes a few minutes with a high-speed connection.
