The iPod is just about everywhere you turn nowadays. One would be hard pressed to find a tech-savvy group or family without at least one. There are options, though, even within the iPod universe to suit every user’s taste. Here’s a brief guide on deciding between an iPod Shuffle and an iPod Nano.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Disregard size. They are both so small that it unless you’re concerned about fitting one in a money clip, you probably won’t even notice you’re wearing either one.
Step2
For minimal listening, or if you’re only going to use it for “study tunes” or “workout tunes,” opt for the Shuffle. It only comes in a 1 gig, which should be plenty of storage unless you’re going to store an extensive library.
Step3
For more serious, broader listening, opt for the Nano. It comes in 2, 4 and 8 gig models allowing you to put up to 2,000 songs or 25,000 snapshots on it.
Step4
For more control over your playlist, opt for the Nano. The whole idea behind the Shuffle is that you don’t choose the exact song you listen to. If you like to browse and see what’s next, get the Nano.
Step5
If you live the by the seat of your pants, get the Shuffle. If you like all your music and don’t mind listening to whatever Shuffle puts on, the Shuffle is a lovely, hands-free experience.
Step6
If budget is an issue, the Shuffle is more bank account friendly. The new Shuffle is retailing for $79 while the new Nano is retailing for about $149.
Step7
Consider all the accessories. The iPod Nano has many more accessories than the Shuffle, so if you’re into home audio or other such accessories opt for the Nano.

Tips & Warnings

  • Looking to save some money? Look for a used or refurbished iPod no matter which one you decide on.
  • If you’re into media other than songs (pictures, mostly) than the iPod Shuffle is not the way to go since it has no screen.
  • Be wary about buying from online retailers without secure connections or if they offer unreasonably low prices.
