MP3 players are getting smaller, sleeker and more stylish. They also hold more songs than ever. There are also models with radios and video screens. The possibilities are endless, but a good way for a consumer to reign in the spectrum of players is to buy one on the Internet. Here’s how to buy an mp3 player online.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Do your research. The most popular players are iPods, but if you’re willing to go outside of Apple, there are some deals to be had.
Step2
Consider the hard drive size you want. It’s about a minute per megabyte, and if you only need your 30 workout songs, you could save a lot of money.
Step3
Test the models out at a local store if you’re able. Try the controls to make sure they’re not clumsy. Check the screen to make sure it’s discernible.
Step4
Check the cables and software to make sure they are compatible with your ports and operating system. This is especially important on Macs.
Step5
Shop around once you’ve chosen your player. The nice thing about the Internet is the ability to check 10 different retailers in less than 10 minutes. Use it to your advantage.
Step6
Buy the player. Make sure there is a tiny lock symbol in the lower corner of your browser indicating a secure Web site when you pay using your credit card.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save a little money and don’t get expedited shipping unless you absolutely have to. You can buy headphones down the line with the money you save.
  • Add up the minutes your mp3 player will hold. Most people don’t need the 80 gig players unless they’re putting their entire catalog (and it’d have to be a big one) on the player.
  • Downloading mp3s without compensating the artists for their musical endeavors is illegal. Pay for your tunes.
  • If you’re using a Mac, be careful. Many players outside the realm of iPod are not Mac compatible, so read the system requirements before you buy online.
