Web sites such as Craigslist and eBay, among others, have become enormously popular in recent years. There are many sites on the Web that offer free classified ad listings and placing an ad is very easy—in most cases your ad will be online within thirty minutes of submission. The Internet is definitely the best place to sell a used laptop. Selling online means your advertisement is seen by a huge number of people and you’ve got the opportunity to sell much more quickly, at a price that’s more favorable to you.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your laptop and comparable laptops to determine your asking price.

  2. Step 2

Write down all the information you’ll need to put in advertisements. This will include your contact details, asking price and any features of the laptop that you want to accentuate.

  3. Step 3

Evaluate the Web sites where you might place your advertisement. (See the Resources section of this article for suggestions.)

  4. Step 4

Choose a site or sites to list your laptop, and Click the Place Ad link (usually located on the home page) to start placing your ad. Check the word or character limit to see how much you can write.

  5. Step 5

Write your ad in Microsoft Word or another word processing program if you have it. This gives you an easy way of checking that you’re under the word limit if the Web site does not have a character counting feature.

  6. Step 6

Cut and paste your ad into the Web site form. Add the other details you need to complete your ad.

  7. Step 7

Check your ad carefully—make sure all your contact details are correct before you publish it.

  8. Step 8

Note down any details the site provides you about ad placement, such as how long the ad will remain on the site.

  9. Step 9

Wait for the offers to start coming in. Be prepared to negotiate or to wait a little if you want to make sure you get your asking price.

Tips & Warnings
  • Put only the most important details in your ad. It’s free, but in most cases you have a word limit, so only write what you need to. Don’t forget to specify who pays for shipping the laptop.
  • Most online classified ad sites do not mediate between buyers and sellers if you have a dispute. You are responsible for all aspects of your side of the transaction.
  • Be wary of scams when you’re buying and selling online. A common scam involves buyers mailing fraudulent cashier’s checks or money orders in payment for items. If you fall victim to such a scam, your bank will hold you personally responsible. To avoid being scammed, deal locally with people you can meet face-to-face.
